[Rewind] April 2016 & May 2016

Yeah… I know May hasn’t ended yet, but to avoid posting another late ‘Rewind” post 3 weeks after the month finished, I have decided to April and May together. This one is going to be a little informal in terms of format for a few reasons that will appear apparent. And before we move on, just a little reminder that I will try to write and release reviews every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Okay, moving along:

Leaving the Group?

We became shocked with the disbandment (or what we dubbed at the disbandment) of Kara at the start of the year. However, it seems like certain groups are facing member line up changes after one of their members had decided to not resign with their company and have since departed ways with their respective groups. Former member of 2NE1, Minzy, and former member of Miss A, Jia, have both decided to leave their successful group and go onto their own paths.  Minzy will (hopefully) make her solo debut in the near future after confirmation came from her new company in which she signed. Jia was announced today that she would be leaving the band after her contract finished. Miss A and 2NE1 faced disbandment rumours from these two events, but both their companies have stated that is not the case. Not only girl groups are facing these changes, but A-Jax (if we all remember who they were) recently lost 3 members (Sungmin, Jaehyung and Jihu). But the list does not end there. Hyunseung departed from Beast, leaving the group with 5 members. It was kind of expected after the numerous articles and petitions asking for his removal. Hyunseung is expected to return as a solo artist in the near future and is still signed with Cube Entertainment. It is always disappointing to hear these news and it has obviously shocked the industry a lot. These members have been with their band since the beginning, so it is always hard for fans. Hopefully, there won’t be any more of this and I wish the former members luck in their future endeavours (because that is something we all should do and not call them selfish).

Descendant of the Sun

Now this is something we all have heard about. The drama has taken Asia by storm and has been proven to be highly successsful. It stars Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Ko, as the main characters. Before you all die from shock, I have yet to watch this drama. So, no spoilers. But I don’t actually have any plans to watch the drama. Because I am not one to enjoy romance and all this lovey dovey sh*t. I just don’t watch the genre (or any mainstream and popular dramas). I prefer the cringeworthy daily dramas. Now, why am I talking about this drama? Well, the OSTs for this drama has literally taken over the charts each time they were released. Not complaining here, but the songs were really good. Like, I really enjoy listening to them and this is probably the first time I have been impressed with the OST for a drama. Anyway, the OST contains songs from Davichi, Gummy, K.Will, Yoon Mi Rae, Chen, Punch, Mad Clown, Kim Na Young, Xiah, MC The Max, Lyn and SG Wannabe. In OST terms, this is pretty much the star studded red carpet. Each song released topped the charts instantaneously and I can see these artists winning the Best OST awards at the award ceremonies already. That is all I am reporting on… Hahaha…

Comebacks and Debuts

For the past two months, many artists have made their comeback and they include ): Block B, Seventeen, History, April, Twice, AOA, Akdong Musician, VIXX, Lovelyz, Up10Tion and so many more.

For debuts, NCT is the big debut for April.  I.O.I is probably the major debut for May. However, we have seen new soloists emerge in KPOP in the past two months. Notably, Jung Eunji from APINK, Woohyun from Infinite and Tiffany from SNSD had their respective solo debuts in the last two months.

Top 5 songs of April

As per normal, these are my top 5 songs of April:

  1. Pretty U – Seventeen
  2. Journey to Atlantis – Laboum
  3. Dynamite – VIXX
  4. Queen – History
  5. Toy – Block B

Top 5 songs of May

May hasn’t ended yet, but it is about to. I will add other May songs to the June list (when I get around to it).

0. Pretty U – Seventeen (I have to. I have been trialling charts and Seventeen has been popping up every single week as the top song for the week).
1. Good Luck – AOA
2. Save Me – BTS
3. Nodding Nodding – Woohyun (Infinite)
4. I Just Wanna Dance – Tiffany (SNSD)
5. Fire – BTS

This one was a long one and I tried to keep it short. I am really behind in reviews and will get them out slowly. It will take me some time to catch up. Bad news is that I have exams coming up and I am going to be slower. I will review every major release eventually, so give me some time. Enjoy the rest of May and see you tomorrow!!!

Queen – History

History has returned to South Korea after what seems to be an extremely long void without hearing from them. However, they spent the last year (or since their last promotions with Might Just Die) in Japan. They successfully made their debut in Japan and have released two singles (L.O.S.T and My Love). Both songs were featured as Korean songs on their latest mini album – HIM.

Jaws were dropped in the writing of this review. Why? Because this song is amazing. Minus the pronunciation problem that seemed to get on every international fans mind, this song is really good. The hip hop vibe is extremely strong in this song. Mixed with electronic and dance elements made it seem so much cooler. Heads were banging along and it soon became one of the most played songs. The song (just without any context) around sounds like they are insinuating towards something dirty but the lyrics are just backs that up. “Get on my back naturally and wag your tail”. Given how they were singing (and it was – again –  amazing), I don’t think this was talking about a dog (oh god…). The English is quite questionable. I get that is how Koreans pronounce Queen, but how about “We All Pac Man” and “Crazy Intoxication Historical Criminalization”? No cohesion on my part. The rest of it was okay though. Another thing that I loved about the song is the really sexy sounding saxophones. They added another element to the song and made it sound so much cooler. Despite the English, I think it is an amazing song and am totally digging it. Just waiting for it to be played at some parties.

Music video wise, loving the concept. Really edgy and it seems to push the boundaries… by a lot. Not exactly sure about the rest of the video, but damn their attire (especially the suits) is so good. It is not that I am hating the video or anything, I have played it once or twice and it still confuses me. So I end up just skipping the video and listening to the song by itself. The solo shots of the guys shirtless or drinking alcohol don’t really mean anything to the video (I don’t think). I just couldn’t link A with B in this video and if I did, I don’t think it would have made any sense. They are singing about the Queen and we got towards the end. But was the rest of the video just showing how rebellious and cool they were? Cause that was all I could piece together. I think the video would have been so much better as a performance video. To me, the dance parts were the best and they were the ones that caught my attention more.

As for the dance, 10/10. Damn, so cool. I think I loved just about everything about the dance. The small James Bond move that they managed to put in and Yijeong’s really standout move at the start. I don’t know. It just made everything feel more edgier and more unique. The one thing is that I was watching one of their performance and I forgot which guy (correction: it was Yijeong), but damn. His hair cut was horrendous and the eye makeup was too thick. I remember replaying the video just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. Be the judge of it – watch it here.

Amazing song and dance. Video wasn’t that great. 7.5/10

End Of Year Chart 2015 + Happy New Year!

Welcome to the end of the year! Each year, I do this “End Of The Year Chart” where I properly rank songs via a personalised ranking system, which shows which songs I liked the most (and which songs I did not like at all – but I won’t name and shame). How do I rank the songs? Simply taking the score that I gave them in the review published earlier in the year, adding it to new review scores for the music, video and performance. Then I add those to other scores from “Songs of the Month” in my Rewind posts and to ensure that I can properly order them, I turn to my iTunes play count. And when I say “add”, there is a mixture of mathematical operations (and I am going to stop here, before I can bore you). In no way is this chart influenced by my choice of best song in the BOBs. But I do highlight them here :).

And here are some interesting facts about this year and the chart itself!

  • A total of 180 songs were ranked on this chart, but a total of 195 songs were reviewed this year (which I believe is a personal best).
  • The first song reviewed and included in the chart is BTOB’s The Winter Tale (released at the end of last year). The last song reviewed and included in the chart was EXO’s Sing For You
  • A total of 16 girl groups, 17 boy groups and 9 soloists are featured on the chart.
  • There is a better mix of boys and girl groups this year, compared to last year, where the first boy group did not feature on the charts until after 16th place.
  • BTS had the most songs on the chart (I Need U, Dope & Run). followed by: EXID (Ah Yeah & Hot Pink), GOT7 (If You Do, Just Right), EXO (Love Me Right, Sing For You), Kim Sung Gyu (The Answer, Kontrol) & Red Velvet (Dumb Dumb & Ice Cream Cake).
  • Rookies were actually a strong force this year with Oh My Girl, Seventeen and Twice ranking quite high up in the charts.
  • The following ranked after 50th place: IU, B.I.G, Crayon Pop, VIXX, Seventeen, Changmin, Big Bang, Brown Eyed Girls and CLC.
  • And finally, this year chart was actually reflected on the BOBs this year. I crowned EXID’s Ah Yeah as best song for both segments.

AND THAT IS IT!! 2015 will be ending shortly. 6 Hours To Go (for me at least)!!! Hope 2015 has been a great year for you all. I thank you all once again for another year of KPOPreviewed. Your support has been amazing. Every comment and like (heck even every view) makes me happy!! Nearly 5 years and still going strong!! Thank you 2015 and I wish you all a Happy New Year wherever and whenever it is time. Let’s make 2016 our year!!! (First review: 2nd of Jan).

Catch Up Review #13 – MYNAME, History, SPEED

Another catch up review. Was supposed to be up a few days ago, but I may have been a little too busy. But with some time now, I shall review the songs for you. If you cannot tell right now, boy groups are up in the spotlight this time around. Today, MYNAME’s Just Tell Me, History’s Must Just Die and SPEED’s recent release What U? will be reviewed for you guys. I was planning on review UNIQ’s EOEO, but one things led to another and SPEED was put up instead.

Just Tell Me – MYNAME

mnjtme

This song was really meh to me. It ticked the right boxes for a modern song and kind of continues on with their mini album they released at the start of the year with Too Very So Much. The song was just so boring. I listened to it once, and haven’t really looked back on it at all. It is somewhat catchy but overall there is no appeal to the sing. The rapping feels very dramatic here as if they are trying hard. As for the vocals, I was fine with it. The music video had this club feel to it and more of a “sexy” concept with the feeling. But the choreography made it feel to distant from the concept and I was very confused. The plot line of the music video was very serious and sexy. But the dance was a little more carefree and playful. So that disappointed me quite a bit. There was so much potential with the music video, but the dance really did not suit it. But the dance did suit the song, so I guess it is just a mismatch between the song and music video then. 3/10

Might Just Die – History

hismjd

Finally, a modern day orchestra. Wow, I was so amazed when I heard this song. I was not disappointed with it whatsoever. The song just punched me in the face. Maybe they did go a little overboard with the dubstep sounds in the song, but I thought that it complimented the orchestra so well. As for the vocals and the rapping, I was cool with it. The first rapping verse though was a little unsettling as it just changed the song up entirely for me. But beside it, I thought it was a solid song. As for the music video, their acting is pretty good. It seems like they were locked away and when they were released by the girl, things got a little out of hand and they made a mistake that drove the girl away. So I guess this where the “Must Just Die” title came from, as they might as well die if the girl is not there. As for the dance, I thought it was pretty good. Those abs are very defined. Probably so many fan girls swooned over them abs. I like the dance towards the end more than the rest of it but overall, the entire dance fitted very well with the modern song. 8.5/10

What U – SPEED

watuspeed

As again, I thought this was an amazing song. The orchestra is there once again but with more of the epic and grand feel for this song. the vocal work was really well done especially the ad-libs at the end. The title was really off putting for me though. What U what? It is a little disappointing to here Taewoon had left the band and the rapping just did not feel like normal. But you can tell that Sungmin and Sejoon tried very hard to fill in Taewoon’s position as well. The music video was a little boring to watch though, I have to be honest. So much more could have been done with it and I was just do bored of it. There was a plot line to it, but it just felt so empty that I am kind of glossing over it. From what I got out of it, the boys follow this girl. And she is very terrified. And I would be as well, mainly because they are all creeping her out at the end. Unless you are a hardcore fan. Then they should be scared of you. Hahahaha… The dancing concept was amazing. They brought tutting into KPOP a few years back and now they are coming in with Heely shoes. I have no idea what they are called, but apparently they used to be popular. Yeah, they existed for a very long time and I only heard of them now. Well, I knew they existed. But the dance is amazing with it in. More complex and I just can’t wait for someone to stack it. Too evil? Yeah, I think so too as well. MUAHAHAHA…. 8/10

Wow, I wrote more as I went by. Click on the song title’s for the music video. The next two reviews will be the more standard ones with just one song. I plan to review both SHINee’s View and Kara’s Cupid. They should be out tomorrow and Saturday, so just a little more waiting.

Psycho – History

History is now back with a brand new single. And now they are back with a much tougher image than ever before and probably an image that would get them locked up in a mental institution. Their comeback song, Psycho, is their 4th comeback since debut. This is also their third mini album since debut. And this band is also quite underrated. They have good songs and sometimes they go for concepts that some bands would never even think of going to attempt. I am just saying, but this band really does deserve more recognition.

This song is freaking amazing. I really enjoyed listening to it, Though once again, this song does sound like a typical KPOP song, I feel that there are some highlights that stand out a lot in this song. The “You’re gonna like this babe” part was really seductive and sounds really cool. Their chorus was also quite cool as well. I am just really disappointed with Kyungil’s solo part during the verse. There is far too much autotune on his voice to make it sound good. It just really distracts me from listen to the song. The rapping was quite good, but it problems in it as well. The same thing goes for the autotune in it and it was far too short. Like the rapper gets one line or like two seconds in the song. That really is not cool. I am not sure of the small instrumental only part in the bridge. It sounds out of place and really does not fit in with the song. Actually, the song was pretty cool until it added the pop vibe into it which got me quite disappointed. but overall, a pretty cool song.

The music video is okay. Not the best music video to be honest. The start reminded me of Big Bang’s Monster. And then we get the creepy church theme which is not creepy at all. And then we cut into the song and actual music video. Okay, so we see the guys get up one by one systematically and then they start creepily staring into the girl in the next building. And then they battle each other to see a glimpse and get touchy with each other as a warning. And that picture scene, where the guy hangs up the million pictures of the girl. Did anyone notice that the very big picture failed to have a nose? Just putting it out there. They call her, but she hangs up on them which annoys and angers them. The girl then gets a letter from next door, to which she does not open it, but she physically goes over and just barges through the door. Uninvited… Anyway, the girl starts to wander around and notice that the people who live at this place are stalking her. When someone appears she runs. Great. Good girl. But to her house. How freaking stupid is that. Anyway so the guys go into for the kill and then have some kind of breakdown to which they don’t choke her. Instead it is revealed that the five guys are technically just one mentally disabled person. It is like a typical horror movie with the really lead character doing all the stupid stuff that really does get them killed in the end. I like it how the music video is shot in the black and white filter, but the dance scenes. They ruined the music video. Too bright. I would not have minded 3 minutes of just plot, but yeah.

The dance is pretty cool. It has that really creepy side to it. The hair pulling and all of the dance moves which they actually teach in a separate video which you can view by CLICKING HERE, were really well done. They did a lot in enhancing the song and it looked really good on stage.

I think this was a really good comeback, it just could have been a little longer and a little better in some areas. 7.5/10

Friday – IU ft. Jang Yi Jeong (History)

Source: http://modernseoul.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/friday-iu-feat-jang-yi-jeong-2.jpg

Welcome to 2014! Did you all have a Happy New Year? I did! Hahaha… This is my first review of the year. Sadly school is restarting in a month, so I have to start doing my holiday homework, so it is going to be an awkward struggle. But don’t worry. I doubt nothing will effect the rapid speed of my reviews. They won’t be rapid once I start school though, but anything that changes will be notified to you guys, so don’t worry. Anyway, IU recently released her repackaged album, on December the 19th. The new album featured 2 new tracks and also includes the tracks from her album, Modern Times. Though no formal promotions were taken (I believe so far), she still managed to achieve a perfect all kill on the charts and remain on the charts as one of the top singers of the year!

I have to say, this song is pretty good. However it does not have me coming back to it more. I like the song more than Red Shoes, but I have to be honest, but it seems to be lost and forgotten quite easily. I have the simple feel of the song which sounds pretty good and awesome. I have to say, both voices in this song, compliment each other. Both have this husky voice which I really dig. The lyrics are quite simple, and I am thanking IU for not singing the song of the same title released 2-3 years ago. You know what i am talking about! Anyway, the lyrics too are quite simple. It is great for a song like this to come out, which allows us, as the audience, to step back from the heavy dance tracks and relax through a song that calms ourselves down!

The music video is quite interesting. I don’t get the whole new trend of one shot videos. EXO did it well, but everyone else is jumping onto the bandwagon now. Sad. However, I really enjoyed the music video. It was pretty nice and like the song too, was relaxing. Though I am unclear about Yi Jeong though. What roles does he play? The best friend who acts like a big brother? or a guardian angel? Or her make believe friend, who she ignores when she talks about love? So many roles in which he can play that has a logical explanation. The music video is quite cute, but the last scene, where she gets dragged into a dark alley. Umm… I just hope I am looking into the video a little too much there! But beside that, really cool music video.

10/10. What a way to start off the year!!! Let’s hope 2014 will bring more amazing songs like this to our ears and minds!!!

Happy New Year!!!

What Am I To You? – History

Source: http://kpopnow.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/history.jpg

History has made their comeback with a new song. This is their second comeback after promotions  of Dreamer and Tell Me Love. This time around they went for the bad boy image, showing fans a much different side of the band. The band has also been nominated to be the BEST MALE ROOKIE on my BOB (Best Of The Best, which you can check out here). I have to say, I like the way they went this time around. Much better than their previous song. Though, they are quite popular among the audience, they don’t perform that well on charts. Maybe next time???

The song has that Latin American feel to it that we were promised, unlike some other song recently. It and that salsa or rumba feel to that makes it addictive to listen to. It had an exotic yet fresh feel to it, giving it a different look to it, from other songs. The vocals in this song are pretty cool and it reminds me of their Dreamer song. The chorus is really good, quite catchy must I add. Tell Me Your Love. The rapping is pretty cool. It has that husky feel that fits the song quite well. The instrumental parts are quite good as well. They give the song more of a balance when you listen to it. The line that I find most interesting the whole song is: “I know how to cheat, but she knows how to play.” That one line to me summarises the whole song and for some reason stands out among the rest.

I personally think, from a western point of view, that this music video has a very extreme rating. I don’t see anything that can be that bad to the audience. Unless having a guy “smoke”, get into a fight or being rebellious is that bad to have a 19+ rating. This music video is quite artistic. We see five different ways a person could deal with a break up. The angry kind, the ‘I want to fight”, the miserably lonely guy, the “sad then happy” guy or the “anger release” guy. I actually think Kyungil’s role (the sad then happy guy) role is the best out of the five and he does a really good portrayal of such a role. Do I hear calls for dramas and movies coming? Not sure about the ending though. The story really does not explain a connection between the five guys, beside the fact that they are going through a breakup. But hey, it was only like five seconds out of the 4 minute and 52 seconds, so I am not going to be that critical.

The dance was really good. It was like dancing the salsa or rumba, which we all know must have two people to do. But instead the guys dance by themselves. Pretty cool. Like that little moment during the first rap. It is like the rapper is looking into his reflection. Yeah I see where all the MJ comparisons are coming from. After noticing those shoes,I have to say, they are pretty shiny. Too shiny to look at the video but instead of their shoes.

7.5/10. Pretty cool. I still believe this band has amazing potential. They just need the right song and the right wow factor. But this is a start. (I honestly thought I would not get this review done tonight. I have been trying to push through my holiday homework, but there is a lot more than I have anticipated. But don’t worry, I am on a two month holiday now, so I am able to release reviews for you!!!)

PLEASE CHECK OUT THIS POST ON MY PAGE. THANKS AGAIN!!!

Tell Me Love – History

Source: http://kpopconcerts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/HISTORY_TellMeLove.jpg

History recently made their comeback after a successful run of promotions for their debut song, Dreamer. They released their latest song, Tell Me Love, took a turn for the more “typical” boy band feel, but with a twist. Seriously guys, if the band does the same song style over and over, they are going out much more quicker than you blowing out a candle. Many bands change their style once in a while to “stand out”. yes, History’s debut song did “stand out”, however what are the chances of you listening to a similar style song. You will just get get bored of it. So you people, who claim to love History because they were “unique”, your argument is really invalid. Big Bang, for example has done, ballads, pop songs, dance tracks, hip hop, rap etc. If Big Bang kept on releasing hip hop songs, they would never have been big as they are now today.

I liked the song. It was not as grand as Dreamer, however still sounds amazing. If you listen carefully, you can hear a mish mash of genres. There is a ballad feel to the song, a dance, hip hop , you name it. Combined together, it sounds pretty cool. I love all aspects of the song from the vocals to the soft feel in some parts to the hardcore feel and upbeat feel the chorus has. I honestly don’t see any other band doing a similar song to this. YEs, the band may enter the “no go zone” but it sounds really professional and well polished. The vocals and rapping (that fifth member has more than talking this time around) were pretty cool. I am going to be quite picky though. The title, sounds really weird. “Tell Me Love”. Yes you brain may put in the comma, but say it without the comma. I was typing out the title for this song and thought, yeah maybe I got it wrong. Turns out, it was right and my mind was playing tricks on me.

Yeah, I honestly have to say lose the first part where the guys are just talking freely to the camera. Great concept, not the brightest idea for this kind of song though. To a foreigner, and I watched the video prior to the subtitles coming out, you look like a total idiot with no voice coming out of your mouth. A recent trend I see in videos nowadays it that they have all these weird computer generated waves that make listen to music all that good, but seeing them while flashing really does not look as great as you would expect it. But despite that, I love the bright white set/background and the lights during the chorus. Bit hypocritical of myself, but it looked quite professional and fitted the song quite well. Honestly the music video was pretty good, minus the first minute or so.

Yeah, this band is not great at dancing. Better than me though, but it is the song that this group depends heavily on to get their song. Their dance moves are not catchy, but I guess they do the job quite well,

7/10. Pretty good, could’ve been better though. And shut up, unloyal fans, You don’t like something, then don’t watch. It is quite easy.

Dreamer – History (ft. IU)

History made their debut recently with Dreamer which to me is a really great song. As dubbed by their company, as the opposite of Fiestar, they are living up to their standards. They are a group of 5 guys, who sound amazing and are great at harmonizing. Seriously if you are looking for a talent male group, this is one that should be on your list. Okay, stop me. Before…..

Spectacular. Amazing. Lovely. Ummm… I am running out of words. Basically, I totally like this song. Though it seems that this is just a rookie group, this group has amazing vocals and really good rapper. Don’t underestimate them, okay? The way they sing the song is really great. If I was to compare them to a well known artist, I guess 5 Whitney Houstons’? Probably a horrible example, but you will get my flow. They rely a lot of vocals which is very important. Their chorus is pretty good, along with their verses. I will be following this group from now on. You betcha! Also, IU’s part seems quite good, after you learn what she really says. If you don’t well, it is just a waste of music, I guess.

The music video, on the other hand, is not that great. It is not memorable like SHINee’s Why So Serious or 4 Minute’s What’s Your Name? each of which I have reviewed (Here) and (Here) respectively. I don’t really understand the music video at all. At first, there seems to be some Russian spy who is really suspicious who is spying on the people who live in the house. Yeah, I am going to stop ruining the music video before I get to the other parts. I love the set which they are dancing on. Looks amazing and really good. Gives off that old Hollywood look to it, which seems to be spread out in the video a lot. That girl too is really pretty. But beside the fact that the music video makes no sense whatsoever, it was okay.

Okay this group is putting their name out there via vocals not dancing. There is not much of a dancing that would be memorable. There is dancing and they seem pretty good at it. But they give off this feel that “I don’t want to dance, because I suck at it”. Good points for giving it a try though.

9/10. Really good.
